Since 1989, Illustrators Australia has been helping illustrators like you grow your business, confidence, client base, and community.
Our iconic logo is the adorable Platypus (designed by Geoff Cook). The Platy logo suits us well, as Illustrators Australia is a pool of unique talent; a non-profit organisation, run by and made up of many diverse illustrators, including children’s book illustrators, as well as designers, surface designers, animators, graphic recorders, mural and visual artists. Our members work in a wide range of media from traditional to digital, watercolour to printmaking, ink to collage and pencil to animation. Creating illustrations that are inventive, imaginative and wondrous is what we do.
Our diverse membership includes over 150 illustrators from all over Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand. We welcome new members, whether you are a student, establishing or professional illustrator. Ours is an inclusive, informed and friendly organisation. If you are a student, freelancer or have regular work in the industry, this is your community.
As a peer-based organisation, we support each other and share our knowledge. Being a creator is often isolating, especially as you learn how to navigate the industry, so we’re here to help. Illustrators Australia is not an agency, but we help build careers and community for illustrators, promoting excellence and advocating for the illustration profession.

We connect authors, publishers and potential clients with illustrators through our members’ portfolios on our website. If you are looking for an illustrator, it’s easy to search or browse the many portfolios and find the right illustrator for your project. We are not an agency and don’t take any cut or commission; in fact, we are a completely non-profit organisation!
Our organisation exists to promote your illustrations. We do that via our website and social media, including our Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube pages. Over the years, other opportunities for promotion, such as exhibitions, magazines, book publications and awards, have occurred, depending on the volunteers’ availability and our capacity.
We provide the contacts, and you reach out to the illustrator yourself.

Our story started with Fay Plamka in 1989. What began as a passionate collective of artists looking out for one another has grown into the nation’s oldest non-profit dedicated solely to illustration. We wouldn't be where we are today without the incredible legacy of our founders and honorary members—including David Baker, who spent two decades curating our Source Books, and Geoff Cook, the creator of our beloved platypus logo.
Today, we continue to bridge the gap between the craft’s rich history and its exciting, evolving future. -
We are an Incorporated Association (#A0019801B) a non-profit organisation of illustrators. Our committee is made up of members and volunteers, just like you, voted in by our membership every year.
